- Since 1902
- Four generations of stonemasonry
- At every cemetery in Luxembourg
A new headstone
A headstone marks a place and carries a name, and it stays there for many years. Some of those we installed 40, 60 or 80 years ago still look new today.
For a single, double or family grave, you choose the stone, shape and inscription, and we carry out the work. We also make burial vaults, upright memorials and memorials for urn graves.
Every natural stone has its own colour and grain. We help you choose the one that suits you.
The quote is free and without obligation. For a new headstone, we prepare it after an appointment at our showroom, at the cemetery or at your home.
How it works
-
Step 1
Appointment.
At our showroom, at the cemetery or by phone, we discuss the options. You choose the stone, shape and inscription.
-
Step 2
Quote and order.
We prepare a free quote, with no obligation. Once you place your order, we start arranging the work.
-
Step 3
Workshop.
We obtain the municipal permit and order the stone, then prepare and inscribe the memorial.
-
Step 4
Installation.
We install the headstone at the cemetery, including its foundations. Allow two to three months between ordering and installation.
Add an inscription
When a name needs to be added to an existing headstone, we carry out the inscription work at your cemetery.
We usually fit bronze or brass letters to match the existing lettering. We can also engrave directly into the stone and finish the inscription in white, gold, black or a colour of your choice.
For a quote, we usually need a photo of the headstone, the exact wording and the name of the cemetery.
We also engrave other scripts, including Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese and Greek.
The cost of an additional inscription depends mainly on the number of letters, whether you choose bronze, brass or engraving, and access to the grave.
The form opens in a new tab and takes about two minutes.
How it works
-
Step 1
Photo and wording.
Send us a photo of the headstone, the wording to add and the name of the cemetery.
-
Step 2
Quote and order.
We prepare a free, no-obligation quote from the details you send. Once you place your order, we schedule the work.
-
Step 3
Installation.
We fit the letters or engrave the inscription at the cemetery.
Cleaning and repairs
We clean, straighten and repair headstones. What can be done depends on the condition of the stone.
Depending on its condition, we work at the cemetery or in our workshop. We can clean the stone, straighten it if it has moved, or renew an inscription that has become hard to read.
An old headstone can often be repaired rather than replaced.
A photo and the name of the cemetery are usually enough for us to prepare a quote.
The form opens in a new tab and takes about two minutes.

When a burial takes place
Before a burial, parts of an existing memorial often need to be removed. We dismantle them carefully, store them safely and reinstall them once the ground has settled sufficiently.
The funeral director usually arranges this work directly with us, so you do not need to organise it. You can also call us yourself. Because the timings are short, this work must be arranged by phone or through the funeral director, rather than by form or email.
We are stonemasons, not funeral directors. We take care of the memorial; we do not organise funerals.
The stone
Granite is the most common choice for a memorial because it withstands frost, water and pollution. It comes in a range of colours, with a grain or veining. Other natural stones are also possible, depending on the finish you would like.
A family business since 1902
Marbrerie Bertrand has worked with stone since 1902, now in its fourth generation. Our workshop is in Munsbach. Some of the memorials installed by earlier generations 40, 60 or 80 years ago are still there and still look new. That is the lasting quality we aim for when we make yours.

Frequently asked questions
Do you work at every cemetery in Luxembourg?
Yes, throughout Luxembourg.
Do I have to use the stonemason in my municipality?
No. You can choose your stonemason, whether you need a new memorial, an additional inscription, cleaning or the opening and closing of an existing monument for a burial. This applies at every cemetery in Luxembourg. Some municipalities regularly work with a particular stonemason, but you are not obliged to use that company.
Who arranges the permits?
We arrange the municipal permit required for the work.
How long does a new headstone take?
Allow two to three months between ordering and installation. This includes the municipal permit, ordering the stone, and preparing and inscribing the memorial.
How long does an additional inscription take?
Allow around two months. We measure the existing headstone, prepare the lettering layout, order the letters, check them on arrival and schedule fitting at the cemetery. Engraving directly into the stone is often quicker than ordering bronze or brass letters. Weather can delay fitting: temperatures below 5 °C or above 30 °C, or a stone that has become too hot in direct sunlight, can mean the work has to wait.
Why must you wait after a burial before reinstalling the memorial?
The ground needs time to settle. A memorial installed too soon can shift or lean, and the ground around the grave can sink. We check the ground before proceeding so that the installation remains stable.
Who takes care of the memorial when a burial takes place?
We remove the necessary parts of the memorial and reinstall them later. You can arrange this directly with us or through your funeral director. Please call us for this work. We do not organise funerals.
Can engraving and installation take place in any weather?
Not always. Cold, extreme heat, wet conditions or frozen ground can delay the work. For fixing and installation, we follow the requirements of the materials used and assess conditions at the cemetery.
Can I still order for All Saints’ Day?
Orders for All Saints’ Day may still be possible, depending on availability. Call us or send your enquiry. We will assess the work and confirm whether it can be completed by All Saints’ Day.
What about Easter?
If you would like the work finished by Easter, please contact us early. We will check the work involved, delivery times and cemetery conditions, then confirm the expected timing.
Are you open during the collective summer holiday?
During our annual closure, an on-call service handles memorial work needed for burials. The office is closed. We deal with quotes and other work when we reopen.
Can an old headstone be repaired rather than replaced?
Often, yes. Send us a photo and the name of the cemetery, and we will tell you what can be done.
Can a name be added to an existing headstone?
Yes, with bronze or brass letters, or by engraving into the stone.
Do I need to visit the workshop?
No. For an additional inscription or cleaning, a photo and the name of the cemetery are usually enough. For a new headstone, we can also meet you at your home or at the cemetery.
Do you make memorials for urn graves?
Yes. We make stone memorials for urn graves as we do for other graves. We do not sell urns themselves.
Can we meet outside opening hours?
Yes, by arrangement, on Saturday mornings, at lunchtime or in the evening, particularly to discuss a new headstone. We can also meet at your home or at the cemetery, where it is often easiest to assess the work. Please arrange these appointments by phone or email.
How much does it cost?
The cost depends on the stone, size, inscription, work required and access to the grave. We provide a free quote with no obligation. For an additional inscription or cleaning, a photo and the name of the cemetery are usually enough, without a visit to the workshop. If you would like an idea of the cost first, call us and we can discuss what to expect.
